When it was
the last time any of you had eaten broccoli lately? Or have eaten a
cauliflower? Or have eaten an artichoke? I’ve been hearing about these
vegetables a lot from past many days, but wait a minute are these really
vegetables? Or are they some other part of a plant? The answer lye underneath
so stay tuned.
Are
plants edible?
Most of us grow plants for beauty,
most of us grow them for oxygen and most of us grow them for fresh refreshing
feeling. But there are people who grow plants, feed them, water them, take care
of them, merely to eat them. Making plant a totally edible object.
But the question here arises that
what part of plants are edible and what are not? The answer is ALL. Yes all,
all part of plants are edible and there are number of foodstuffs that we’ve
been eating for so long but hardly know which part of plant it is.
Roots, Stems and Leaves:
Just for the record, we all have been
taught in our primary classes that few of the roots like potatoes are
part of our daily diet and are good to eat. Similarly, stems like celery,
asparagus, rhubarb and leeks are nutritionists. We also do eat leaves being lettuces, collards,
spinach and cabbage. The point here is that no doubt they’ve been
part of our diet from so long but we hardly recognize the fact that from where
they are actually originated.
Should we eat flowers too?
Besides leaves, roots and stems,
flowers are also being part of our daily diet. Besides being colorful,
attractive, and cherishing they have been a part of pioneering and exclusive
recipes from long ago. They can be main dish like a Cauliflower or they
can be part of a salad like Broccoli. In either one way of the other we
consume them like actually consume them in its proper meaning.
Forms of edible flowers:
As already mentioned, flowers may be
used as full main course meals like Cauliflower or as a part of salad like
Broccoli. They can also be used in beverages like Rose petals that are used in
herbal teas. Candied violets can be used to in making of chocolate cakes making
them an ingredient of deserts too. In
short no meal is a whole meal without convention of flowers in it.
I am sure many of us have not been
enlightened about such vital practice of flowers before. These facts enhance
the amazingness send flowers to Philippines and liveliness this natural creation that is flower possesses
in its self. However, not every flower is an edible flower and so amply certain
risks as well.
Cautionate risks one needs to know:
Before consuming a flower one needs
to know that whether it’s edible or not, because some flowers may be poisonous and
harmful for mere health. Moreover, some
flowers might be appetizing but one need to look after the quantity they are
consumed in. like apple flowers contains some cyanide and therefore
should be consumed just one in a day.
